Dear friends,

We are currently working to realise a dream: the Tree Planters Employment Society. Its purpose is to employ disadvantaged people to run renewable energy projects and plant trees to create woodland nationwide in carefully selected areas. Initially we will only be able to start by employing ex-prisoners, but once established, we will be keen to employ people with mental health problems, homeless people, people with learning disabilities and people with visual impairments — people often considered by many to be unemployable.

To finance the project we intend to utilise available grant funding and eventually rely mainly on returns from investments in renewable energy projects. As trees and woods provide wide benefits to society and the environment, there should be ample opportunity to secure European Union, public and private sources of funding. Bearing in mind that the government published a white paper on rural England (1995) suggesting an aspirational target of doubling woodland in England over fifty years, there should be no lack of work for us (the national average for woodland cover in England is currently 8.7% (up from 8.3% in 1995) with 11.7% (up from 11.3% in 1995) for the UK as a whole as compared with 44% in Europe). There should also be ample opportunity for biodiversity tree planting; carbon sink tree planting; brown land renewal tree planting (greening old mining and industrial sites that are too polluted for any other use) and sustainable commercial forestry. We aim to develop the Tree Planters Employment Society in two phases. In the first phase we will endeavour to become profitable, not to make profit for profit sake, but to ensure our resources are utilised most efficiently to maximise social and environmental objectives. The whole operation will be deliberately kept simple, efficient and highly replicable so it can easily be copied worldwide.

To further ensure the Tree Planters Employment Society continued self-sufficiency, a second phase will begin with the start of various Tree Planter Employment Society social enterprises. They will use sustainable commercial forestry, wood-related industries and some renewable energy operations and investments to maximise profit. All profit will be used for development and expansion to be eventually re-invested back into achieving further social and environmental objectives.

As our projects will tackle three key social needs simultaneously; environmental improvement targets, climate change targets and providing employment for disadvantaged people, this should in turn provide for a whole spectrum of society's needs.

We also have aspirations to employ disadvantaged people to mass tree plant all over the world. We hope to provide a positive, highly replicable example of giving back to nature what we have often taken for granted and destroyed in the past; trees or the planet’s lungs. Furthermore, as our work will result in the valuable future resource of forests, this will, in no small way, help to regenerate the natural environment. Thereby contributing to helping to safeguard the ability of our children and future generations to survive on this planet without extreme suffering and hardship caused by deforestation, climate change and environmental neglect. As such the Tree Planters Employment Society should easily be seen as much more than just a most efficient and effective way to utilise environmental and social funding.

At present the employment of mental-health-sufferers, homeless people, people with severe learning disabilities and people with visual impairment is not viable in the UK due to current United Kingdom Employment and Benefit Regulations. Our first task will be to earn equal employment opportunities and equal civil rights for our potential employees. We will post details of the required changes we need to be made to existing legislation shortly.
